IN MEMORY OF LES LACEY

Les Lacey

07/01/1955 - 12/12/2023

On a very chilly January Monday morning, a group of the Somerset Scrumpies gathered at Haycombe Bath Crematorium, to pay their final respects to Les Lacey, a fellow member of the Scrumpies, who had unfortunately lost his battle to cancer just before Christmas.

Les was a loving husband to Liz, proud father to 3 boys and a girl, and loving and caring grandfather. He was an engineer by trade and had worked for several companies throughout his life time, he had even kept his position open, as he had yet to officially retire. When younger he had been a keen football player, good enough to play at league level. Also he was a long time Spurs fan. But no matter how busy things got, he always made time for the people he cared about, family came first.

A biker from an early age. Les had owned several bikes in his time, the last couple being a Dragstar 1100, and a lovely Virago 535 that he had purchased just 2 weeks before he died, intending to ride it throughout the summer.

My memories of Les are that he was a quiet and unassuming man with a passion for motorbikes. He enjoyed looking at the bikes, even when he was to poorly to ride. He struck me as a brave man who didn't complain, even when suffering from the effects of the chemotherapy. He would still come to the Somerset Scrumpie breakfast meetings, even though he was unable to eat a breakfast, and struggled to drink due to the painful ulcers in his mouth. I sensed that he enjoyed the fellowship, camaraderie and the sense of belonging. A true brother!

Les will always be an inspiration to me, with his quiet uncomplaining nature, and I along with many others will miss him.

It was very heartening and respectful to see his Virago had been ridden to the crematorium by Les's son Mark as a tribute to his father. The only one of us to brave the severe windchill of -2.
