Royston Rally

Cambridge

Back to the 50’s

Four years have passed since Becks’ 1st rally at Royston but we were back again 4 years later – and he felt right at home.

As usual a group of us arrived on the Thursday to make a full weekend of the rally. We arrived with great weather and as usual got the tents up and went off to the supermarket for provisions. Salad seemed what most had – followed by cheese & port!!

This was another rally where food became an issue. The burger van that was booked was involved in a road accident and turned over. As a result Centre 10 had to find an emergency burger van which has to be said was not bad – as reported by those who used it. Most of the Scrumpies made a journey to Tesco every day for a slightly healthier diet – not counting the cheese, port, crackers, olives.....

Becks was celebrating coming back to the place where he went to his 1st rally and as a result he looked a little rough the next day –

On the Friday the Scrumpies went out for the day to Cambridge and went on an open top bus to learn about the city.

We parked in the Park & Ride and got a local bus into Cambridge. Someone had a chance to use a personal item that he had only recently got – and it worked.

Now we were on an open top bus, where there is wind. There are some things that you do not do on an open top bus. One of them is to think that a really big comb-over would stay in place – even if you have a whole can of hairspray plastered on it.

We all sat behind him on the bus and you have to imaging all the silent laughter coming from the Scrumpies – there was a serious amount of tight lipness & shoulder jiggling. At one point, as the comb-over was waving back and forth at us, Joan had to bury her face in my chest to stop the screams getting out!

There were other things we learnt.

Make sure you know where you parked your bike

The architecture.

We also found out that the rules of football were decided in the 1800’s in Cambridge. Why is a goal mouth as wide as it is? It’s because thats how far apart the 2 trees were that were being used as goal posts – true.

Back to Tesco and the rally site to get ready for the evening.

We have no idea why he feels he needs to walk about when he is having a shave. He also seems to walk miles when he is on the phone. When we were in Cambridge more Scrumpies arrived on the Friday and were ready to have fun. Its a shame if you arrive late – it feels so lonely –

Dont panic, he was given help to put his tent up.

Now we all know that the Scrumpies Party is no longer advertised nationally. Our special t shirts do not advertise the selling of any tickets – but they are noticed. Of course you have to remember to bring your special t shirt.

Scrumpies keep getting grabbed by members of other Centres for special photo’s.

Why would they want us to stand next to National Committee members to have our photo’s taken? No answers on any postcards please!

Grasshopper has lost some weight now that he has had all his locks chopped off.

On the Saturday some Scrumpies went off to the Royal Anglian Museum and others went to Wimpole Hall – a National Trust property.

At Wimpole Hall we noticed a design fault with the bright yellow polo shirts – they attract wildlife, lots of it. It became so bad that Neil had to change. This may be a winter shirt.

Saturday night was the 50’s night and the Scrumpies again came out fighting.

Marlon Brando, Betty Boop, and the Blues Fathers!!

As usual the Scrumpies had fun, they were educated, and learned that yellow polo shirts should only be worn in insect free zones.

Hope to see you at the next one.
