Somerset Meeting and Run

Sunday 16th March 2014

The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hurray! What an excellent turnout with almost thirty people turning up including a couple of wanderers from Wiltshire even if they were in a car! What a difference a bit of nice sunshine makes!

Ivor kicked off the meeting outside with loads of information on the future events planned for the club. Included is Show time at Lansdown near Bath, future Rally dates and so much more. It’s going to be a busy year!

Hands up for a rideout! Monmouth was elected as the target. Off we proceeded with some sixteen bikes via the garage at Churchill to fuel up. Off we set through Congresbury to pick up the A370, past Long Ashton and along The Portway to Avonmouth docks, all very quiet on a Sunday. Not a motorway so far! Up to Aust and over the bridge free of charge as we were on the bikes. Over the bridge and past Chepstow to take the second left on the B4293 on the Itten Road through Devauden and past Trelleck to arrive at Monmouth on the B4233. It was lovely countryside with great views over the Welsh hills and the Severn valley.

Once we found the bike park alongside the river we went different ways on foot and found whatever refreshment we wanted. We ended up at The Gatehouse and just managed to order the roast dinner before they stopped serving food.

We made our way back to the bikes and the decision was taken to proceed to Tintern following the River Wye. Memories came back of Bob Millar having a serious puncture on his first ever rideout as we parked up close to the Abbey. Some disappeared to a café but we had ice creams and enjoyed the sun.

Once we met again it was down to Chepstow, over the bridge, M4 and M5 back to Weston. In total some 115 miles covered and an ideal way to start the season with lovely dry weather and good company.
