Somerset Rideout to

Muchelney Abbey

September 2010

Following Somerset's September meet 11 people on 9 bikes set off for a ride.

Led by Clive we travelled down to the Somerset levels with the intention of visiting a pottery

with an art studio and refreshments. Guess what?

It was closed!

Luckily for us, just up the road was Muchelney Abbey (or what's left of it)

So we pulled into the car park to check it out.

Ian having gone at least an hour since his breakfast decided he was hungry, so headed straight for the nearest food supply

After convincing the man in charge that we were all old enough to get concession prices.

Steve then got an extra discount for group booking. bringing the tour price down to an extortionate £2.89 each

It was not a very busy day so the guy said he would show us around as well. Bargain!

There was less than 10% of the original abbey buildings left But we all found it very interesting (well most of us)

Yes folks, it's a chimney, a very big chimney. We all sat like good children and listened to teacher.

While looking around the old kitchens, a ghostly monk figure appeared behind us. Didn't know 14th century monks wore bike boots!  Many people in the middle ages who thought they were better than the rest, and sat on their thrones looking down on them.

Died a horrible death and were buried in a stone lined coffin (designed for taller people)

After lining up for a photo on the steps leading up to the monks crapper We went next door to the church to see its renowned painted ceiling

An excellent day out, thanks to Clive for taking us, and to our entertaining guide (sorry I've forgotten his name)

This story was related by the bloke with the slim figure.
