Fat Lady Run 2012

by Tonker

Well the alarm went off at what seemed to be the middle of the night, still dark and seeming rather chilly. Who's idea was it to go this early? ( I blame Archie myself). Went outside to bike shed and found ice on all the windscreens, long johns on or not? No don't be a wimp I told myself, at least it's dry.
First stop Langford for fuel, met Ivor there cradling a cup of coffee trying to warm up. Got to the  Burrington car park and there were Dave, Kate, Pat, lyn, and  Linda waiting . With the three bikes just arrived from Langford, it made a nice little group to ride up to the Mendip Inn. Dave cussed about leaving at stupid o'clock (I blamed Archie again)  and as we left Bill tagged on the back.
The ride up was clear, crisp, sunny and dry, what a good start to the day! Arrived at the Mendip Inn to meet the rest of the Scrumpies who were already assembled,

Said our helloes, had a quick chat and it was time to leave. Archie led, over the top through Shepton and then dropped down the hill on the A37. This is where it started to get colder foggy and wetter! Head lights disappearing into the fog behind me I couldn't tell if we were together or not, but as no one dropped back I figured we were all still there. A fag stop and on to  the services  at the end of Ilminster bypass for a coffee stop. Half an hour later we were off on the last leg to Lyme. Along that stretch the sun burnt through and it turned into what would be a glorious sunny day.
As we dropped down over the hill towards the Cobb the sea looked great, flat as a mill pond and not a breath of wind. We couldn't have had it any better!

We all parked up in the bottom car park and those of us who were fishing made our way along the Cobb to our boat that was waiting, We had enough people to make up two trips, so as the first boat load left the rest of us decided to get some fish and chips. Those that weren't fishing just did what they wanted to, in and around Lyme for a couple of hours, I hope they enjoyed their day.
After an hour the first trip came back 22 mackerel on board, not bad for the time of year. So the second boat had a target to beat, not that there is any rivalry between us Scrumpies! Well we only managed 20 but we hatched a plan that we would all say we caught 32 and therefore beating the other boat hands down, but we were scuppered when the boatman let the cat out of the bag. Serves us right for trying to cheat.

As we walked back along the harbour wall we could see and hear some of us going home up the hill, awesome sound bouncing off the house walls. The rest of us got kitted up and rode back to the services together before saying our goodbyes and going our separate ways. Those going Weston way on the motorway had a nasty rain shower to go through (I blame Archie for that) but it didn't spoil our day out, as always the sun shone most of the day for us. Hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did, but then I'm biased!
