3rd to 5th July 2015
We left Weston around 11.00 and headed north and west towards Neath. The weather was warm and the traffic was light apart from a queue at the tolls so we arrived around 12.30 to find I was the first bike on site! The usual cheery welcome from the Welsh and we were asked not to drive on the grass due to the damage from last year. So wheelbarrows to the rescue and off we went to the far end to set up camp directly in front of the goalposts. Tents erected, air beds blown up and sleeping bags in place whilst drinking a cold beer thanks to Bob so chill out time in the afternoon sun had to be done. We watched others arrive from the various centres. I sent a picture to Bunch just to prove Tonna can be dry!
Towards the evening we had Boots, Sid and June, Blackie and Jan, Annette, Steve, Becks and Dawn (Almost a Scrumpy now!) plus me on site from The Scrumpies. Having enjoyed the afternoon sun with a few beers we decided to eat on site to find good food at a sensible price of £4.50 and an excellent choice of about five or six different meals. Two Bob started the disco and the warm evening air meant we stayed in shorts and tee shirts. The band that night were called GTFBI which stood for “Get The F***ing Beers In”! That should have given an indication of what was to come! Annette hurried back to her tent and used ear plugs all evening. Far too loud and the hall rapidly cleared even after they had turned the volume down! However Otto did his usual to the joy of the Hen Party girls.
There was a little drizzle overnight but we woke to more sun and after a good breakfast at £4.00 quickly served up the run out was off to Tenby at 10.30 ish. Taffy from Centre 8 led us in to Tenby and we were given the full local knowledge guided tour and he found us the best ice cream shop in town. Whilst there we were caught in the middle of the local triathlon with many a cyclist taking to the roads. Becks ended up with an enormous truncheon! Where did that come from? We all went our different ways and we went along the sandy beach and up the steps to Saint Catherine’s Island and toured the old fort dating back to Napoleonic times. Well worth a visit as the views back to Tenby are quite spectacular. We also went to the top of Castle Hill and relaxed in the sunshine. A walk down to the harbour ensued and along the front overlooking the gorgeous North Beach to have a coffee and light bite. We met again at 16.30 and headed back to site in even more sun.
That evening we went in to Neath and found a hotel restaurant where the evening entertainment was a guitarist who was good even if a little too loud for our taste. What a laugh we had but you had to be there to understand! Back to site and the entertainment was “Dual Control”. What a fantastic couple with a great repertoire and at a sensible volume so that the clubhouse filled and we were also entertained to Forest Gump and his companion. Well done Becks and Dawn!
Sunday dawned to more sunshine so after yet another super breakfast we folded up dry tents and loaded up our various forms of transport and said our goodbyes to The Welsh who had done us proud despite a low turnout but that is what made it so very good. Plus the weather was ideal. Tonna in the dry is great! Overall, a great weekend in good company and in good weather. What a shame others had decided not to come! You missed out on a great weekend in lovely weather!
A bit of a heavy shower as we approached Port Talbot but it soon stopped and the sun came out again. As we entered Weston the clouds were black but I just managed to get the bike in the garage before it poured down, what excellent timing!
In all, some 310 miles covered over a great weekend that can only be Tonna.
