It all started with an email from Linda, our events co-ordinator, way back in February suggesting a skittles evening here in Weston open to all. The start time was shown as 19.30 at The Century Club in Worle, a local drinking place for Clive. The evening was windy and once I arrived quite a few were already there. It was good to see the locals there consisting of Clive and Sue, Merv but without “her indoors”, Ivor and Sylvia, Jeff and Beryl. Ian and Lyn arrived shortly followed by Annette. Bob and Sue came followed by Dave and Kate. Then the Bristol contingency arrived suitably late consisting of Stu and Denise plus Pete and Dawn. Good to see them out and about.
Once names were up on the board the game started in earnest. Somerset rules applied with the ball having to be on the alley boards prior to the white line on the longest lane ever seen with rubber balls. Bouncers off the furniture should not have counted! Tell that to Lyn and Kate! Three rounds with both Sue and Annette being the only people to get a clearance. Time for a buffet laid out by Sue. Linda arrived just in time for the buffet but too late to play. The game continued and the high scores were achieved by Sue for the ladies and Jeff for the men.
Clive took on the role of Master of Ceremonies and duly presented Sue with a bottle of red wine for the highest lady score and Jeff won a bottle of white. Ivor got the wooden spoon in the form of a bar of chocolate I believe!
Then the game of killer started with the final being between Sue and Pete. One pin left and it stayed up for about six attempts with Sue winning yet again. Good on you girlie!
Even the bar maid watched with interest and did not close us down.
Finally may I say a great big thank you to both Clive and Sue for organising it and obtaining all the food and prizes which made the evening so good for all of us. How about a full inter county challenge next?
