Ride to Langorse in Wales 2015

Sunday 19th July 2015

I left home only to find Ivor and Sylvia fuelling up at the BP garage so we rode together to Banwell to discover Linda already there. Breakfast ordered and then more people arrived. We had a great turnout with Blacky there as well. A quick meeting was held outdoors chaired by Ivor with an update of the many items on the calendar.

Then four of us left to meet others for a run in to Wales. Just as we left Tonker turned up for his usual late breakfast! Linda, Sandra and her friend Rob led by me charged up the M5 and through Avonmouth to arrive nicely on time.

Once at Aust Services we had Blackjack Bob, Dave Rutley, Roman, Carr, Pat and Sue, Gary and Alison all fuelled up and raring to go, or so we thought, more later. A couple with a pair of Viragos also met us there who will be joining the Scrumpies soon.

Off we went over the bridge with Bob leading and me as tail ender. Past Chepstow with slightly damp roads, through Usk and on to Abergavenny to the bus park for a quick break and look at other bikes there. Now we were in glorious sunshine.

Up the A40 towards Brecon and out in to beautiful green countryside through Crickhowell and hang a right at Bwich for Llangors Lake and the café there. Good food was readily available with an excellent choice and a stopover of almost two hours to enjoy the tranquility of the largest natural lake in South Wales, view the fish, watch the sailing boats and visit the Crannog which is an ancient lake dwelling reputedly like the one built there possibly some 5,000 years ago.

A lovely place to visit and camping is available there. Maybe it could be a stop over one weekend? Linda and Roman had places to go so left early. One luckless fellow was running on reserve, no names but a Virago needs fuel in it doesn’t it Gary? He agreed to leave and find fuel whilst we headed back to Abergavenny.

Once there we refueled and waited for Gary to turn up which he did within a few minutes having found fuel in Brecon to the value of £16.66! That equates to over three gallons! He must have been running on fumes!

Off we went all fuelled up and headed for a stopover at The Steel Horse Café for further refreshments. Bob nearly ended up with a free coffee but owned up to the deception. There were quite a few bikes here including a 535 which was duly carded. It was so warm in the sun we found shade and chatted away as great friends do. One word that came out in conversation was “etymological” which had us in stitches! Look it up at http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/etymological and well worth including in a conversation! Well said Carr!

We finally decided it was time to head home after a great ride with many thanks to Bob for putting on the run in great weather and in good company. A total of some 160 miles and almost all in the sun!
