It’s 9.30am and as I mount my trusty steed I know I’m in for a great time! Well you just do, don’t you…I’m on me bike, the sun is shining and I’m about to spend my weekend with the Scrumpies. In my eyes things just couldn’t be better.
Plans were confirmed a few days ago and as I ride over to Shepton Mallet (Merv & Shirley’s gaff) I know that Gary and Alison are trotting over from Bristol & Kev and Steve are cantering up from Dorset (ok probably more of a gallop). Archie & Sue were to meet us there, bringing Steve along with them but as they didn’t ride their bikes today, I guess you could say they came by shanks’ pony (Boom boom !!)
The admission charges at the Abbey were a little steep at £9 a head and we tried many things to wangle a price reduction – Kev even confessed to wearing pants meant for 8yr old boys but the lady at the pay desk was not to be swayed. With the smell of hog roast wafting over from the encampment Steve decided we should quit whilst we were ahead and make our way to the food!!
What followed at the Abbey was a good few hours of Medieval traditions, Cooking, Clothing and Jousting to name but a few. Some very interesting exhibits shown off by some very er? passionate people (They really do play the part). The acting was great, although I suspect a health & safety nightmare and we all became experts at hissing the baddies and cheering the goodies. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh.
It was lovely to bump into Bob Penfold and his wife, who had been tempted to visit the Abbey by the plans published in my emails (see they do work) and as Steve, Kev and myself saddled up in the carpark, bound for Coleford, we simply had to smile at the little boy excitedly being led to the festival by his mum…..”Mummy” he said “why are the knights riding motorbikes???”
