Tewkesbury Medieval Festival

On 9th & 10th July 2011, thousands of re-enactors travelled from all around the world to help re-create the Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471. The battle of Tewkesbury took place on May 4th 1471 between the houses of York, The White Rose, and Lancaster, The Red Rose and was the final battle of the Wars of the Roses.

The Scrumpies had a ride on the 9th to see what they could see.

A number of determined Scrumpies went for a ride including Malcolm’s son who came on his Drag Star. Mark should also be in the picture but I seemed to have missed him. The forecast said that there may be rain but the thought was that we all carry waterproofs & we would use them it we needed. There is no motorcycle parking in Tewkesbury at all and with all the activity there was no car parking spaces either. We had no option but to take over a coach space. With no one to get permission from we felt it would be cheaper to pay for a ticket then get one. I don’t think anyone of us had paid for parking before – it seemed strange.

There are two main parts to the area – the battle ground and the village. We went to the village to see what was about.

Becks was convinced that he could use this helmet and mail on a bike. He also felt that the gauntlet would give as much protection as a leather glove. The only problem is he could not close his hand with them on.

It was good to see a woman with her own weapons. Archie got a bit scared & felt that he had to arm himself.

The people really dress up in all the proper gear and in full armour. It seems however from the picture that you need to wear a nappy though – maybe its because the armour takes so long to put on & take off.

We stopped to have venison steaks & rabbit curry and who should walk past.

They were camping for the whole weekend with their family for the festival. Shazza said that they had fantastic weather with not a drop of rain. She continued to go on about how dry it was. Well – you know what happened next don't you.

It pelted down for the next half hour at least. We all sheltered in one of the stalls so we stayed 100% dry. Archie however seemed shaken, but not stirred and felt that he could stay out in the rain – like a real man. As we had seen most of the stalls we thought that when it had stopped we would go. We did not see the battle so here are some photo’s from when we were there last time.

A good ride there, Joan would not let me buy a sword again, and a dry ride back. Those that went enjoyed themselves.

See you next time.

Take care,

AJ
