Calne Bike day 2015

Saturday 25th July 2015

Linda and I started out early from Weston with a slightly overcast sky and on damp roads and got to Calne just before 8 to find Blacky and Pete already there. The first job was to erect the igloo and unpack the banners and other kit showing the Scrumpies logo. Quite soon after we had Pat, Shazza and Hoppy turn up so more hands to assist getting our usual location looking good. Banners tied to railings and trees soon had the area looking good. The scooter belonging to Pete looked out of place so he was relocated to the trolley park! Good on you Pete to turn up so early and assist.

Linda got the kettle on and we took a break to have drinks and biscuits. Roman and Dave Rutley with Lee and Nick Marshall also turned up to assist.  The site looked great with all the bunting flapping in the light breeze. We even had to tie one to the front forks of Pats bike! That made it look much better! Blacky and I decided it was time to go to the café and had a lovely breakfast to fill the belly ready to meet and greet more people. Upon our return Bill Emery had arrived on his XJR so parked at the back not to be confused with our basic club bike theme. Lee looked half asleep and did his bit chatting to viewers of the bikes. Nick Marshall also joined us. We saw Sid and June who had travelled up from Plymouth to take a look around. That takes the bottle for a nice day out.

The sun was out and it brought out many bikers of all calibers and genders. Along came Gary and Beans, Merv and Sue to swell the ranks.

Dave took a seat and promptly fell asleep so maybe a new handle of “Dozy” could fit? Not sure what he had been up to the night before! Angie suddenly started singing nearby “It’s a kind of Magic” so she could get my attention. Thanks Angie. Maz and Spatch arrived closely followed by Jan and her friend Lynne with Phil in tow. Blackjack Bob had arrived but he did not have his measuring stick out and parked on the other side at the back near the walkway. Many eyes took a closer look at his paintwork.

We took a wander around and looked at the many different bikes, trikes and stands around. The music was better this year as the stage had been moved to a side road. Crowds gathered all intent on watching and listening to the music. I listened to Josie and the Outlaws for a while who were very good. I had a quick chat to Spike with his new lady and also saw Eddie and Jenny who I had not seen for a long while.

Prospective new members Nigel and Pamela showed up again so they must be keen to join in. Bob and Jacky were also there and even Terry the carpet turned up later in the day. Our stand looked great with all the banners, flags and the dome forming the centre piece. We should end up with quite a few new members as we had several enquiries about membership. One guy I spoke with from Swindon has two 1100 Viragos! This type of event is a great chilled day out amongst good friends.

Pack up was rapidly done with so many to help so many thanks to all who assisted or travelled to the event in glorious weather. Traffic leaving the venue was heavy so when we left I lead us to the bypass to avoid the bottleneck. A total of some 110 miles covered and all in the sun. Hope I mentioned all who visited.
