April Fools Run

 Sunday 6th April 2014

Last minute decisions, is it bike or car? It had to be bikes for the Somerset crew! Jimmy and Karen came over to my place and we hit the local pubs on Saturday night and back to mine to chat and start on the whisky!  We finally called it a night around 02.45 in the morning! We were up early at 07.00 with no takers for a cooked breakfast, just tea and toast before leaving at 08.15 to meet at Morrisons.

We were six, to include Jeff on his first organized run. As we proceeded to Burrington to meet others if they arrived and our Deputy Rep in a bloody car! For heaven’s sake, we are a bike club! Off we went with Ivor leading and me tail ending with a little dark blue Ka following in our spray. Up over the top near Priddy and I could only just make out the third bike in front of me due to low cloud and driving drizzle! Dave, want to swap places?

We met those hardened bikers from the Radstock area and continued on to Warminster Services where there were a plethora of cars awaiting our arrival.  Dorset and Bristol/Gloucester reps should be ashamed of yourselves! Some fuelled up as Mark outlined the plan, changing the plan several times!

Mark went to start the run and his bike would not start! Lesson for the day, you must be in third gear to bump start a Virago!

Bikes went first for a run around the Salisbury Plains with third man drop the order of the day. This was a nice little potter as the roads were not in good condition as we had been warned. Into Longleat itself and Bob had already parked the van and erected the igloo to provide a helmet park and somewhere to eat our sandwiches out of the keen wind.

People stopped and stared as we came down the hill maybe thinking we were going into the lion enclosure! No way!

We all enjoyed looking around the house and all its glory.

The animal park was a great attraction with the little monkeys being a keen favourite with many.

The day was a little chilly so home and a warm bath beckoned.

Off we set at various times and Somerset came back to Weston across country and experienced the drizzle yet again.

Some 125 miles covered and an ideal way to start the season if only the weather had been a bit kinder. The bikes are in need of a good clean now.

Special thanks to Mark for organizing the venue with such a good price deal and to Bob for providing both the shelter and helmet park.
