April Fool Run 2011

Swindon Steam

April Fools? Not this year, summer burst on the scene with gusto and bathed us all in sunshine. I won’t forget the year is snowed and only the very foolish amongst us turned up on bikes with a dose of hypothermia! But hey, this is April and you have to expect the unexpected. March was… well March I suppose, just as you’d expect it to be and then it seemed to jump a month and overnight it’s become summer.

I counted 36 bikes in all, which is one of our biggest turnouts in a long while. The main meet was at Chippenham with everybody well on time, after all there was a lot of catching up to do. Apart from Grasshopper now owning one of Neil’s Warriors and Brian Stockdale has a Harley, we all more or less seemed to have the same bikes as last year.

AJ led the ride and part way through he quite rightly changed the route! The original was 23 miles, which for typical April Fools weather would have been about right, but it wasn’t, this was like the end of May so he piled on an extra 20.

The pace was right and we all kept together, which is something that’s tricky to do with such a large pack, you do need patience.

Joan was back marking on her trike and thankfully all the markers waited for her before pulling off, I suppose the fear of suffering her wrath would have ruined their entire day! Blocking those couple of busy roundabouts helped as well. You know who did it……

Swindon Steam Museum was our destination and the bike parking all planned in advance gave us one long run just right for our number. Inside there’s a couple of locomotives (that’s a technical term) one called the Lode Star and the other called the North Star so a photo opportunity had been set up in advance to get a couple of Stars inside next to one of them, the other being down a flight of steps, so that one couldn’t be.

Bulk discount had been arranged for those that wanted to go around the museum, which a lot took advantage of

and a great choice of catering just opposite in the shopping mall. I heard that someone bought a new fridge/freezer, what was that all about?

We all spent time sitting outside in the sunshine swapping ideas on which events we’d be attending this coming season until the last of us left at 3.30pm

The whole day was well planned and very well executed, many thanks to AJ

we know it was you.

As ever the sun was shining

Sorry if you couldn’t be with us
